Our Story

I love creating new flavors, I love the smells that rise from my beautiful copper jam pots and the entire shiny, magical experience of jam making.

-Wendy, Founder and Chief Jam-rista

My name is Wendy Read and I am the founder and chief Jam-rista of Sunchowder’s Emporia. I was born and grew up in New Jersey and my corporate IT job brought me to Longwood Florida in 1991. I have always yearned to do something more creative than engineering voice network capacity, and the universe was good enough to grant my wish last year. I had been freed from the bounds of corporate America! And so…my new story begins. The next chapter in my life.

I have always been drawn to cooking and baking, have collected hundreds of cookbooks over the years and had dabbled a bit in jam making. With my new-found freedom, I brought my first gorgeous copper jam pot and the rest, we shall say, is now history! Bubbling and brewing and developing new flavors became my passion. Mastering the gel point and perfecting the timing of the ingredients became a driving force! I moved to a small commercial kitchen soon after, so that I could begin to sell my products at our local Longwood farmer’s market. The response was overwhelming!!! (I never thought that I would have groupies!)

You see all of my jams are handcrafted, we use only fresh fruits, spices and ingredients, we only process in small batches and we never use corn syrup, pectin or preservatives. Our jams take much longer to process than commercial jams as pectin is not added to form the gel. All the fruits are cut and processed by hand by myself and my wonderful British husband Andrew who “indulged” me in my “hobby” as he called it in the early days! I am passionate about using quality ingredients and I love being able to preserve the harvest. My hope is that my jams and chutneys will also become pantry staples and wonderful time savers in your kitchen as they make fabulous glazes, dips and appetizers for mealtimes. They can be added to quick breads and cookies for truly unique baked goods.

My dream is to open the Jam Pot where you will be able to find me in my French Provincial Barn Chateau Restaurant and Emporia, making and incorporating my jams and condiments into gorgeous seasonal foods. My mission is to delight your taste buds with the finest of culinary creations!
